What is the Sea Turtle Conservancy?

The Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) is a non-profit membership organization. Founded in 1959 by Joshua B Powers in Gainesville, Florida. STC has become a world leader in the protection of endangered sea turtles.

The organization was established after Dr. Archie Carr published the inspiring, award-winning book, The Windward Road, highlighting the plight of the sea turtle. Dr. Carr served as Scientific Director at STC from 1959 until his death in 1987.

Before the establishment of STC, little was known about the importance of sea turtles and the effects their impending extinction would have on marine ecosystems. Thanks to their ongoing efforts, we now have a much more comprehensive understanding of both sea turtles and the world they live in.

The quest for knowledge and understanding endures, which is why Tortuga continues to support this incredibly valuable project.

A Global Initiative

While the Sea Turtle Conservancy is based in Florida, its protection and research projects are international.

During his lifetime, Dr Carr was committed to preventing sea turtle extinction using scientific methods. Continuing his research in Costa Rica for over 40 years, STC has accumulated invaluable data on the migratory habits and reproductive ecology of sea turtles.

On the beaches surrounding Bocas del Toro, Panama, STC has done significant work to protect the hawksbill and leatherback turtles. Once doomed to certain extinction, these magnificent creatures are now on the road to recovery, thanks to the efforts made to protect nesting females, and public education initiatives.

Around the world, STC is actively involved in research projects investigating the effects of tourism on nesting beaches and feeding grounds and monitoring juvenile turtles in the Bermuda area.

Critical to the survival of many endangered sea turtles, migration patterns are monitored, giving us a better their natural migration behavior.

The information provided by STC is an invaluable resource for conservationists around the world. It allows for integrated strategies to protect breeding grounds and natural migration routes, ensuring that sea turtles can survive in a world fraught with challenges.

The Importance of Protecting Sea Turtles

Over many years, STC has become established as an advocate for the protection of marine turtles in the US, expanding its efforts to the rest of the world.

By creating awareness of the importance of sea turtles to the marine ecosystem, and protecting natural habitats, the survival of these species is ensured. This has been accomplished by implementing varied policies internationally to educate the public and ensure that the turtles are protected.

The STC has been instrumental in establishing conservancies to protect the natural habitat of sea turtles.

An innovative satellite tracking program provides real-time observations on migrating sea turtles and has been viewed by over 500,000 children. This has generated excitement and awareness amongst the youth of the importance of preserving and protecting these endangered animals.

Without the continuing work of the STC, the variety of sea turtles in existence would probably be extinct. This would have an enormous effect on the oceans and beaches. Few of us realize how important these quirky and beautiful creatures are to the survival of so many other species.
